The President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, launched strong accusations against state institutions which according to him have not done enough to sustain the elderly.
In a Twitter post, president Meta said that the elderly have been completely forgotten.
“Gratitude, respect and appreciation towards all the elderly in Albania that have given so much for the prosperity of the families and our homeland. Despite their contributions and extraordinary sacrifices, The International Day of Older Persons, finds them as a marginalized part of the society, carrying a heavy burden and almost abandoned by the state”, writes Meta.
The head of state also weighed in on the pension index of this category, saying that the sum they receive is insufficient for their costs of living and healthcare.
“Low pensions make their living unbearable in relation to market prices and with highest living costs in the region. Their monthly pension is insufficient to even pay for their medicines, electricity and water bills”, added Meta.
President Meta also spoke about massive emigration of Albanians and emphasized that strong and clear politics are needed to stop this phenomenon, “which is leaving a devastating impact for the country”.
“The loneliness that the elderly are experiencing from depopulation, the greatest drama of our people and families in recent years, is unacceptable and calls for immediate resolution by bringing back hope to these families and convince them to build a future in Albania, near their relatives”, appealed the president.
