South Africa end Six Nations speculation by committing to Rugby Championship for next decade

South Africa have committed to the Rugby Championship for the next decade, defying speculation that they could head north to join the Six Nations.

Having skipped this year’s Rugby Championship – leaving New Zealand, Australia and Argentina to play a Tri-Nations tournament – due to Covid-19, the Springboks have not played a match since winning the World Cup 12 months ago, and are not due to play until facing the Lions in July.

South Africa also pulled its teams out of Super Rugby, moving them to the Pro14 in Europe, suggesting a gradual shift north.

But a statement overnight from Sanzaar – who run the Rugby Championship – said South Africa would be back next year.

“The southern hemisphere rugby powers have recognised the need for change in these difficult times and have committed to an international rugby future through to 2030,” said chief executive Andy Marinos.

“The re-commitment by the four unions to the long-term future of the international game is an important start as we embark in a new direction.”
