Hugh Carthy in the Vuelta hunt as Primoz Roglic takes stage 13

Before Hugh Carthy rolled off the start ramp in Muros for today’s arduous mountain time trial, fellow British rider Tao Geoghegan Hart had predicted the unheralded Briton to cause a surprise in the overall standings.

And while a second successive stage victory at this year’s Vuelta eluded Carthy, his fourth-place finish was enough to maintain third overall in the race.

With a 47-second deficit to new leader Primoz Roglic, it also leaves him in contention to become Britain’s second surprise British Grand Tour winner in the space of a fortnight after Geoghegan Hart’s Giro d’Italia heroics.

Before the start of the stage, Geoghegan Hart had said: “Hugh’s a strong time trial rider and really underrated against these sort of guys for the rest of the race but he’ll do great the final week.”

The stage might have been just 33.7kilometres in length but, such was the steepness of the climb to the finish at Mirador de Ezaro, it required a bike change for the final few kilometres.

Both Carthy and Roglic, who had been close on times for much of the ride against the clock, made slick transitions but it was the Slovenian who proved the more adept on the final ascent.

Roglic, though, will not be taking for granted the fact he eclipsed Ricard Carapaz as the new race leader.

He suffered a late implosion at the Tour de France to lose what had appeared a near-guaranteed victory and, with a 39s lead over Carapaz, still has five stages to contend with on the lead-in to Madrid, most notably Saturday’s 178.2km mountain stage.

Carthy, like Geoghegan Hart before his Giro d’Italia win, is far from a household name in the vein of Geraint Thomas or Chris Froome.
