Former Interior Minister in North Macedonia sentenced for abuse of power

Former Interior Minister in North Macedonia Gordana Jankulovska has been sent to Idrizovo Prison to serve a four-year sentence for abuse of power while she held the post of the Minister.

She was found guilty of buying a luxury ‘Mercedes’ with an estimated value of 600 thousand euros on behalf of the Ministry, which was privately used by Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, who is on the run.

Jankulovska had knowingly spent money from the budget of the Ministry to meet the former Prime Minister’s demands. The case against her was delayed because she gave birth to her child and because of appeals against the decision.

Jankulovska was initially sentenced to 6 years in prison, but higher courts reduced her sentence to 4 years. The director of the prison, Aleksandar Donev, confirmed for Euronews Albania that Jankulovska was taken by the police at 17:00 on Monday afternoon and was put in the women’s ward of the prison.
